My name is Alyssa, and I am the owner of Cooking Basically. I live in Illinois with my husband and we both enjoy cooking. Growing up my mom taught all of her kids to cook, bake and she never made it seem like a chore. She never minded us being in the kitchen, in fact I think she enjoyed it. She is a huge reason for who I am today. Food is a big connection in our family. We may not always talk to each other but we when we do we find ourselves in the kitchen. Family dinners always end up with us in the kitchen laughing and eating good food.
I find that being in the kitchen creating recipes and food is a huge stress relief for me. This past year I got sidelined with a health issue that sidelined how I ate and cooked. I couldn't even cook or bake due to my health being so bad. I missed that connection and cried about it often. I had to cut out gluten from my diet and that intimidated me as well as a few other things that effect my stomach. I was simply overwhelmed. My mom bought gluten free flour and made her special bread with it to test it out. She is always down to experiment in the kitchen. My husband reminded me a few months ago that I need to look at it like I did when he had to do a low salt diet. I took on the low salt diet as a challenge to change up recipes and even make new ones. Shortly after our discussions I woke up with two words " Cooking and Basically" and I knew I needed to start my blog. My husband helped me come up with the name "Cooking Basically".
Cooking Basically blog reignited the spark inside of me to start cooking/baking again and not be so scared to take on the challenge. My goals are to share not only gluten free, and low salt but also normal everyday food. I want to inspire people that even those who have dietary needs can have good food. I have found a lot of premade gluten free foods are terrible. So, I want to change that. I want everyone to find a place here at the table and no one is left out.
